Following a traffic collision earlier this year, extensive damage was caused to a safety barrier at Faintree. As a safety measure, temporary traffic signals have been in place since the incident whilst a new barrier has been both designed and manufactured. In order to install the new barrier, the road will need to be closed for a short period. This has been planned for 8 May to 12 May 2017. The section of the B4364 to be closed will be between the Bridgnorth bypass roundabout adjoining the A458 to Neenton. The road will only be closed during the day between the hours of 9:30am and 4pm, and a signed diversion route will be in place.
Shropshire Council will also be undertaking other works along this road during the road closure, including carriageway patching and drainage repairs. This will not only result in all the works being completed in one go but will also avoid the need for further road closures, and therefore minimise future disruption to the network.
The traffic barrier sited outside Stone House in Lower Faintree has been damaged following one of a number of RTC’s at the site.
Shropshire Council have tried to obtain quotations from two companies and both have stated that due to the constraints of the site they are unable to provide a barrier that complies with current design standards and criteria.
Therefore, they have two options available:
- Provide and install a tensioned vehicle concrete barrier. This is not thought suitable for the location mainly due to the aesthetics.
- Improve, increase the existing signage and lining at the site and provide a high friction carriageway surfacing to warn motorists of the severe bend and to improve the surface of the road to aid motorists. The high friction dressing would be applied at a later date during 2017/18 as part of a significant carriageway scheme.
Area 1 (Cross Houses – Harpswood) – will definitely require a road closure – there is approximately 600 sq.m of machine patching which will take 2 days’ worth of work here which will require a closure.
Area 2 (The Down just north of Eudon George Junction) – could be done under temporary traffic signals – however there is only one area of repair and therefore will only take a few hours to complete and will be incorporated within the work in area 1.
Area 3 (Lower Faintree bend) – Barrier work which has been replaced with additional signage which can be done using temporary signals.
Area 4 (Neenton Village) – Minor drainage work and STW undertaking a minor alteration. Envisaged that this work will be undertaken at the same time as works in area 1.
